Dr. Carolan has written seven children's books to date, all of which are illustrated by his wife, Joanna Carolan. Their first book, entitled Ten Days in Hawaii, A Counting Book, was published in 2002 and was awarded a Ka Palapala Po'okela Honorable Mention by the Hawaii Publishers' Association. Six more books have followed: B is for Beach, An Alphabet Book, audio CD by Lelani Rivera Bond. Where Are My Slippers, A Book of Colors, audio CD by Keli'i Kaneali'I, won an “IPPY” Finalist Award in 2005. Goodnight Hawaiian Moon, narrated by Amy Hanaiali‘i, won a silver medal in the 2007 Independent Publisher’s Moonbeam Children's Book Awards, and was a finalist for a 2008 Audio Publishers Association Audies® Award. Old Makana Had a Taro Farm, audio CD by Willie K and Eric Gilliom, won a bronze 2008 Moonbeam Children’s Book Award in 2008. This is My Piko, published in January 2009 is narrated by Napua Grieg. A President from Hawai‘i is their most recent book published in July 2009.

Baby TerenceDr. Carolan was born in Melbourne, Australia. He received a scholarship to attend the University of Oregon and moved to the United States. After receiving his BS from the University of Oregon in 1967, he moved to New York and taught at the New York Institute for the Blind. He received his Master's degree in Special Education from Columbia University in 1969. In 1971 he was accepted to Temple University, Philadelphia PA and received his M.D. from Temple University Medical School in 1975. Dr. Carolan moved to Hawaii in 1977 and was the Chief Resident of Kapiolani Children's Hospital from 1977 to 1978 . He opened a pediatric private practice on the island of Kauai in 1978. He is currently a full-time Pediatrician and a member of the Hospital Board at Wilcox Hospital in Lihue, Kauai.

He was named one of the best doctors on Kaua'i by the 2005 Garden Island readers' poll. In addition to being a wonderful doctor, Dr. Carolan loves to tell stories.

In 2002, he and his wife, Kaua'i artist, Joanna F. Carolan, collaborated to put together his first book "Ten Days in Hawaii, A Counting Book". Written by Dr. Carolan in wonderful rhyme and illustrated by Joanna Carolan, "Ten Days in Hawaii" helps children have fun as they learn to count. Dr. Carolan's second book "B is for Beach, An Alphabet Book" makes learning the ABC a fun Hawaii adventure and was released in September 2005. Dr. Carolan's third book, "Where Are My Slippers, A Book of Colors" helps children learn their colors and will be released in November 2005.

Joanna Carolan painting in 1964Joanna F. Carolan was born in San Francisco, California. In 1967 her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. David Sears, moved to Kauai. She spent her summers living with her grandparents in Kapaa, Kauai and moved to Kauai permanently in 1991. She attended the Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco California from 1978-80, studied watercolor painting at the University of California, Santa Cruz and studied ceramics with ceramist Judy McDermott in Sydney Australia from 1988-90.

She is an artist and the owner of Banana Patch Studio, a fine art and ceramics studio in Hanapepe, which she founded in 1991. Her art can be found in galleries, gift stores and private collections throughout Hawaii and California. Her watercolor art is well known throughout the Islands. She illustrated "Ten Days in Hawaii, A Counting Book", "B is for Beach, An Alphabet Book", and "Where Are My Slippers, A Book of Colors". She is the author and illustrator of "Little World, A Book About Tolerance" published in 2001 by Banana Patch Press.
